Hit #7 - Fat Boy Slim and Prickle Pullers

Welcome to REALity Bites—your go-to source for real, unfiltered insights on brand and marketing (plus other stuff) for good humans in the financial advice industry...delivered at delightfully random intervals.

I almost didn't send this newsletter because of what’s happening in the markets. But then I thought, no—I refuse to get sucked into the doom and gloom spiral.

I hope this short read adds a positive ‘pop’ to your day 😊.

REALisation - 50+ is Fantastically Full of Possibilities

I saw Fat Boy Slim a few weeks ago. The age-inclusive concert was brilliant for a couple of reasons:

It finished at 9.

And for 2 hours, Fat Boy Slim (aka Normal Cook, aged 60) bounced on stage barefoot with the same energy as when I first saw him 20 years ago.

It does show how brilliantly diverse the over-50s landscape is - it's a wild mix of lifestyles, attitudes and aspirations.

Consider some of the variety out there:

  • The Encore Performers like Fat Boy Slim—still crushing it professionally well into their 60s with no signs of slowing down.

  • The Reinventors—transitioning from corporate careers or running businesses to board positions, consulting, or entirely new ventures.

  • The Work Escapees—who've been meticulously counting down to their last day of work.

  • The Global Nomads—racking up frequent flyer points and stamps in their passports.

  • The Prickle Pullers—finding genuine joy in routine, perfectly content tending to their pristine gardens with zero desire to venture beyond their postcode.

All with distinctly different worldviews and visions of what 'retirement' even means to them.

There's over 9 million over-50s in Australia. Sure, not all of them are 'advisable'. But the ocean of potential clients for financial advisers is vast and varied.

So, something for you to ponder if you're a financial adviser who works in this space:

Beyond their super balances and investment portfolios, what types of humans do you want to be spending your time with—advising, guiding, inspiring?

REALity Check - Australian advisers - watch the Zs

I'm a big fan of using AI to turbocharge your genius. But there's a sneaky Americanism creeping into Aussie adviser content.

Before you copy and paste that AI-generated content, check for those pesky Zs.

"Realize" should be "realise"
"Prioritize" should be "prioritise"
"Organize" should be "organise"

Your get the picture.

Quick fix: Next time you fire up ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or whatever your favourite AI tool is, drop this prompt in before anything else:

## Australian/British English

Always use Australian/British spelling and terminology (e.g., "optimisation" not "optimization", "specialise" not "specialize", "organise" not "organize").

In REAL Life - Brandover is 2

The last 2 years have been a wild ride. Over that time we’ve had the absolute privilege of transforming over 20 financial brands.

Through this experience, we’ve refined our process and got really clear about who we help:

Heartwise financial advisers - who blend emotional intelligence with money management:

  • Solo Advisers

  • Multi-Adviser Practice

  • Multi-Service Financial Businesses (FP, accounting, mortgage broking)

It’s never too late to celebrate. We made a little vid to mark the occasion.

And if you get a chance, check our revamped website: www.brandover.au
